About

Language Mojo is an independent publication about learning languages effectively.

There are more ways to learn a language than ever before—structured courses, comprehensible input, conversation practice, apps, tutors, immersion, spaced repetition, and countless combinations of them. The challenge isn’t finding something to try. It’s figuring out what actually makes sense for you.

What We Explore

Language Mojo looks at language-learning methods, courses, tools, and resources with a practical question in mind: how can they help someone make meaningful progress in a new language?

We explore different approaches to language learning, explain how they work, and look at the strengths and limitations of the resources that use them. Because learners have different goals, preferences, budgets, and amounts of time available, we don’t assume there is one method or product that is right for everyone.

Our Approach

Our goal is to make useful distinctions rather than simply declare winners.

When we evaluate a course or resource, we aim to separate firsthand experience from information we’ve researched, distinguish verifiable facts from marketing claims, and explain the reasoning behind our conclusions.

Language Mojo may earn commissions when readers purchase certain products through links on the site. Those commercial relationships do not determine what we say about a product or prevent us from discussing alternatives. When affiliate relationships apply, we disclose them.

Why Language Mojo?

Learning a language is a substantial commitment of time and effort. Choosing the right approach can make that process more productive—and more enjoyable.

Language Mojo exists to help learners understand their options, choose resources intelligently, and find an approach they can actually stick with.

About the Author

Kevin McRae writes from his experience as a language learner. Over several years, he has studied Spanish through apps including Duolingo and Babbel, classroom instruction, and extended stays in Spanish-speaking countries. He has also explored Czech through apps and time spent in Prague.

He enjoys building vocabulary, but turning familiar words into sentences, understanding spoken conversation, and mastering unfamiliar sounds remain challenges. Those experiences shape his interest in how different learning methods help—and where learners can get stuck.

Kevin values language learning as a challenging, enjoyable way to keep his mind active. At Language Mojo, he draws on his own experience alongside research, making clear which is which.
